About this Performance
Music by composers near to Michael Tilson Thomas’ heart make up this program, beginning with the Romantic beauties of Tchaikovsky in his extremely popular tribute to Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers. The Russian composer displayed his abiding love for the music of Mozart with his Variations on a Rococo Theme – a brief, elegant concerto for cello and orchestra. One of the world’s leading cellists, French virtuoso Gautier Capuçon, will dispatch its challenges with utter charm and grace.
American maverick Charles Ives’ rarely performed, mighty and massive Holidays Symphony contains four movements – Washington’s Birthday; Decoration Day; The Fourth of July; and Thanksgiving & Forefathers’ Day – that coincide with the seasons, starting with winter. Composed over 16 years, the piece mashes up familiar hymn tunes, marches, and songs from the composer’s New England childhood, creating moody, unexpected atmospheres in the extraordinary, visionary way that is pure Ives.
