About this Performance
Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Phil lead Strauss’ Don Quixote, an epic tone poem that pits the infamous “Man of La Mancha” against a flurry of windmills and wizards, featuring the LA Phil’s Principal Cello Robert deMaine and Principal Viola Teng Li as soloists. BBC Music Magazine lists Maria João Pires’ rendition of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 among the work’s best recordings, writing, “You know you’re in for something very special when the first chord of this piano concerto makes you sit up, senses instantly attuned...[Maria João] Pires’ minute shaping and shading are just as captivating. She can make what looks on paper like a formulaic ‘brilliant’ figuration into an expressive event in itself.
