For much of his life, J.S. Bach created sacred music week after week, as required by his job as a church organist and music director. The Christmas season provided extra inspiration and opportunity for Bach. He composed a grand Christmas Oratorio, which consisted of six separate cantatas, each telling a part of the Biblical story. The first cantata celebrates the first day of Christmas. Cantata No. 6 celebrates Epiphany, traditional end of the Christmas period. Conducting this festive program is one of the world’s top Baroque specialists, Dutch keyboardist Ton Koopman, who has recorded all of Bach’s nearly 200 cantatas. Two other pieces on the program, both instrumental, were not composed for Christmas, but enhance the spirit of celebration.
