About this Artist
Mia Ruhman is elated to participate in her second year in the LA Phil Composer Fellowship Program. She is also deeply honored to have been selected as the 2019/20 Sue Tsao composer fellow. Through this fellowship, she’ll be composing a piece for the talented musicians of YOLA. Mia is 17 years old and is a senior at Palisades Charter High School. She has participated in the National Children’s Chorus for 10 years and is a member of the Premier and Scholar ensembles, which have performed at the Vatican, the Great Wall of China, and the Demilitarized Zone in South Korea. She’s the soprano section leader for Pali High’s concert choir and a junior soloist with Palisades Methodist Church. Over the summer, Mia wrote the score for a short film directed by Chelsea Trotti that won first place in the 2020 Teens of LA Film Festival. Currently, Mia is a finalist in the All-American High School Film Festival and in the 2020 Walter Hussey Composition Competition. She is a singer-songwriter and accompanies herself on the piano. In her spare time, Mia loves to hike and spend time at the beach. She studies classical composition with Dr. Ian Krouse and is extremely grateful for her musical mentors Luke McEndarfer, Dr. Pamela Blackstone, Thomas Kotcheff, Sarah Gibson, and Andrew Norman.
