One of the most dynamic conductors of his generation, Lorenzo Viotti is currently Chief Conductor of the Dutch National Opera and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra. In the 2023/24 season, he continues his collaboration with Barrie Kosky with a new production of Il trittico (completing a Puccini trilogy featuring Turandot and Tosca). This season also features an extensive tour of Germany, Switzerland and Spain with the Vienna Philharmonic, a tour of Germany and Belgium with his Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as his first public foray into Wagner, conducting Lohengrin in Amsterdam.

Highly in-demand as a guest conductor, Lorenzo Viotti regularly works with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Wiener Symphoniker, Filarmonica della Scala, Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and further symphonic highlights will see the continuation of his close collaborations with the Münchner Philharmoniker, Staatskapelle Berlin, and Tokyo Symphony Orchestra.

At Teatro alla Scala, he opens a much-anticipated new production of Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra, directed by Daniele Abbado, as well as a revival of Kálmán’s Die Csárdásfürstin at the Zürcher Opernhaus.

Born into a French-Italian musical family in Lausanne, Lorenzo Viotti studied piano, singing, and percussion in Lyon and attended orchestral conducting courses with Professor Georg Mark in Vienna, where he also performed as percussionist with numerous renowned orchestras including the Vienna Philharmonic. He completed his conducting studies with Nicolas Pasquet at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar and has won several prestigious conducting competitions, most notably the Nestlé Young Conductors Award at the Salzburg Festival in 2015, the 11th International Conducting Competition of the Orquestra de Cadaqués, and the MDR Sinfonieorchester Conductors Competition. He was Chief Conductor of the Gulbenkian Orchestra Lisbon between 2018 and 2021, and in 2017, received the “Newcomer of the Year” award at the International Opera Awards in London.
