Jean-Michaël Lavoie is an outstanding young French-Canadian conductor who in recent seasons established an international reputation both in Europe and in North America.
Assistant Conductor of Ensemble intercontemporain from 2008-2010, he frequently worked in association with Pierre Boulez, including the Lucerne Festival Academy. This collaboration lead to a series of contemporary music projects and an ongoing relationship with Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Resonanz and with Israel Contemporary Players. He made his American debut in 2010 with a residency at the Los Angeles Philharmonic as a Dudamel Conducting Fellow making his Walt Disney Hall debut in the LA Phil’s Green Umbrella contemporary main series.
In 2011 Jean-Michaël Lavoie made his debut at Teatro alla Scala, Milan conducting together with Susanna Mälkki the world première of Luca Francesconi’s Quartett and he collaborated on a revival of this same work at the Wiener Festwochen a year later. Recent highlights include recording with Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France for the radio series Alla Breve on France Musique, operatic debut with L’Opéra de Lyon, conducting Der Kaiser von Atlantis in Valence and in Lyon, and conducting the world première of a new work by Christian Lauba La Lettre des Sables with Opéra National de Bordeaux.
Jean-Michaël guest conducted at the Berliner Festspiele at the Berlin Philharmonie and at Salzburg Biennale. He made symphonic debuts with BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Toronto Symphony, Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken-Kaiserslautern, SWR Sinfonieorchester Freiburg, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Aarhus Symphony and Edmonton Symphony.
The 2014/15 season sees Jean-Michaël Lavoie making his debut with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg at the Festival Musica and with the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, and returning for further projects with Ensemble intercontemporain at the Venice Biennale, Ensemble Resonanz, Victoria Symphony Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.
