About this Artist

Captivated by dance, Dimitri Chamblas joined The Paris Opera’s celebrated dance school at age ten.

During his career, Dimitri Chamblas has collaborated with creators such as Jean-Paul Gaultier and Karl Lagarfeld, composer Heiner Goebbels, artists Christian Boltanski, Andy Goldsworthy, and Dan Colen, choreographers William Forsythe, Lil Buck, Mathilde Monnier, and Benjamin Millepied among others.

In 1996, Dimitri Chamblas created with Mathilde Monnier (director of Centre National de la Danse) the research and writing residence: an occasion for artists to create personal creative space outside of the traditional production process.

Chamblas is co-founder of EDNA with choreographer Boris Charmatz. Together they have organized art and social events, performances, exhibitions and published books. Their duet “A bras le Corps” has been performed on every continent in world-renowned theaters and festivals. This duet is part of Paris Opera ballet repertory since 2017.

In 2002, Chamblas started creating dance and visual art works for brands such as Nike, Chanel, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs, Van Cleef and Arpels, Dom Perignon, and Longchamp.

In 2013 as digital curator, Chamblas invented “Mutant Stage” with producer Amélie Couillaud: a series of 10 art films for the French Fondation d’Enterprise Galeries Lafayette, designed by architect Rem Koolhaas.

In 2014 Dimitri Chamblas was nominated as artistic director at Paris Opera in charge of the 3rd Stage. He founded this creative digital platform by inviting artists such as Glen Keane, Xavier Veilhan, Bret Easton Ellis, Julien Prévieux, William Forsythe, Rubber Legz, United Visual Artists, Lil Buck, Barbara Hanigan and Jonas Kaufmann to create original artworks inspired by Paris Opera.

Passionate about technological advances, in 2015 through a partnership with Google Cultural Institute, Dimitri Chamblas created the first immersive dance film, captured in 360-degree based on an original dance piece choreographed by Benjamin Millepied and performed at Paris Opera Palais Garnier.

In 2017 he launched Studio Dimitri Chamblas in Paris and Los Angeles, a structure that hosts all of his projects and collaborations, including a duet with the star dancer Marie-Agnès Gillot, or a creation with architect François Perrin for the Performa Biennale in New York, his artist residency at Salo club in Paris.

In 2017 Dimitri Chamblas becomes the new dean of dance at California Institute for the Art (CalArts) in Los Angeles and created HHUMANN, a 75-dancer work presented in the streets of downtown Los Angeles and at Hauser & Wirth Gallery. 

In 2017 Chamblas started performing a duet with artist and musician Kim Gordon.

In June 2019, as part of the LA Phil Fluxus series, Chamblas directs crowd out, a 1000-singer piece by David Lang. The massive opera takes place at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Chamblas’s work has been performed in venues such as Tate Modern London, Centre Pompidou Paris, Geffen at MOCA LA, Paris Opera, and New York’s St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery among others.
