A rising star in both concert and opera, DANIEL COHEN has conducted orchestras including the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester and Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre National de Montpellier, and the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari. Last season saw Daniel make his debuts with the Orchestra del Teatro Petruzzelli, the Orchestra dell’Arena di Verona, the Festival della Valle d’Itria in Martina Franca as well as at the Maggio Musicale in Florence.
This season Daniel returns to the Orchestra del Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari and the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, makes his debut with the Norrlandsoperan, and conducts the Young Israeli Philharmonic.
Contemporary music is a prominent feature in Daniel’s repertoire and for two consecutive seasons he has taken part in the Lucerne Festival Academy’s Composer Project, working with Pierre Boulez. This season’s Lucerne Festival sees Daniel conduct a new work by Benjamin Attahir, sharing the podium with Pablo Heras-Casado. He is also greatly supported by Daniel Barenboim and is currently Assistant Conductor at the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra where he has been involved in the preparation of a Beethoven symphonies cycle as well as major works by Schoenberg and Boulez.
A keen opera conductor, last season Daniel made his debut with the Canadian Opera Company, in Christopher Alden’s production of La clemenza di Tito. He has also conducted a production of Francesco d’Avalos’ opera Maria di Venosa at the Festival della Valle d’Itria. He regularly works at New Israeli Opera, where he has conducted productions including Tchaikovsky's Pique Dame, Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and Verdi's La traviata. Last season included Berg's Wozzeck and Verdi's Otello, and this season, he conducts performances of Rigoletto. Daniel also conducted the Israeli Opera Studio productions of Rossini's La Cenerentola and Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro.
Daniel Cohen is currently Music Director of the Jersey Chamber Orchestra. He is also Music Director of the Eden Sinfonia in London, with which he made his Queen Elizabeth Hall debut, and is also Artistic Director of the Gropius Ensemble, specialising in a synthesis of music and theatre in collaboration with actor Itay Tiran. In 2010 Daniel was appointed Permanent Guest Conductor of the Israel Chamber Orchestra.
Following completion of the postgraduate conducting programme at London's Royal Academy of Music, Daniel won first prizes at the Admont International Conducting Competition and the Aviv Competitions. More recently Daniel received third prize at the Evgeny Svetlanov Conducting Competition. Daniel was supported by the America-Israel Cultural Foundation throughout his studies.
