About this Performance
American composer/conductor Dan Welcher’s substantial setting of Pablo Neruda’s Abeja Blanca (White Bee) was commissioned by the great mezzo Jan DeGaetani and was premiered at the Aldeburgh Festival in 1979. In its lyrical yearning and scoring (female voice, woodwind, and piano) it is an inspired partner for The Shepherd on the Rock, one of Schubert’s many mini-masterpieces. There is nothing “mini” about Schubert’s first piano trio, but it too is a masterpiece, one of sunny tunefulness and great invention within classical forms.
