Sister pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque are known for their deep artistic interpretations and boundaryless collaborations, both of which they will bring to the double piano concerto written for them by Nico Muhly. Muhly is as much at home with Björk or Grizzly Bear as he is writing opera and orchestral music, and he has “a stunning gift for creating, with just a flicker of a gesture, an immediate and unerring sense of atmosphere” (The New Yorker).
The newly appointed music director for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Gustavo Gimeno, leads the LA Phil in color-rich 20th century music by French composers Maurice Ravel and Henri Dutilleux. In Une barque sur l’océan, Ravel paints the shifting shapes of the sea, and in his second suite from the ballet Daphnis et Chloe, the composer evokes morning in a grotto that turns to a celebration. In between, Dutilleux’s Métaboles is constructed as a slowly evolving theme and variations that showcase each section of the orchestra, all while dazzling harmonies and textures emerge and wane.
