Celebrated French pianist and Los Angeles resident Jean-Yves Thibaudet begins his two-week “On Location” residency, November 21 through December 2, appearing as soloist on the first of two subscription programs November 23, 24, and 25. He plays George Gershwin’s jazz-infused Concerto in F on a program conducted by admired French maestro Emmanuel Krivine. Orchestral works by Gershwin (the Cuban Overture), Ravel (Boléro), and Debussy (Ibéria) complete the program. Upbeat Live, a free pre-concert lecture with Charles Barber, takes place one hour prior to each performance in the Grand Hall.

Other events during Thibaudet’s residency, which begins on November 21, include concerts with the Philharmonic and Lawrence Foster (Nov. 30, Dec. 1 and 2), chamber music, jazz, and working with students. On Monday, November 26, the pianist participates in the Philharmonic’s Chamber Music series at the Skirball Cultural Center’s Ahmanson Hall, playing Ravel’s Violin Sonata (with Principal Concertmaster Martin Chalifour) and Poulenc’s Piano and Wind Sextet. Thibaudet will also play jazz at The Knitting Factory in Hollywood on November 27 (7021 Hollywood Blvd.; tickets $15); visit with elementary school students who will also observe the pianist in rehearsal, and present a piano master class (open to the public) at the Colburn School following the matinee concert on November 30. Thibaudet’s “On Location” residency is sponsored by the Music Alive residency program of Meet the Composer.

Gershwin met Ravel during the latter’s tour of the United States during the late 1920s, and the two profoundly impressed each other – Ravel’s piano concerto (the Concerto in G) is just one reflection of the impact of their meeting.

French pianist JEAN-YVES THIBAUDET, renowned for his elegant and sophisticated playing, appears with major orchestras and ensembles worldwide and is a prolific and highly-praised recording artist. The versatile musician’s diverse repertoire extends beyond the classical literature into the jazz genre. His 1997 CD featuring compositions of the late jazz great Bill Evans received Germany’s Echo Award for 1998. Born in 1961 in Lyons, Thibaudet began playing piano at age 5. He studied at the Conservatory in Lyons and at the Paris Conservatory, winning the premier Prix du Conservatoire at age 15. He went on to capture top prizes at International Competitions in Italy, Japan and the U.S., including the 1981 Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York

EMMANUEL KRIVINE began his musical career as a concert violinist, following graduation from the Paris Conservetoire where he won the Premier Prix at age 16. He turned to conducting at the advice of Karl Bohm, and shortly thereafter was named Permanent Guest Conductor with the Nouvel Orchestre Philharmonique of Paris. His triumphant appearance in Berlin during a 1983 German concert tour firmly established his credentials on the podium. Krivine served as Director of the Orchestre National de Lyon from 1987-2000. Acclaimed for his guest conducting engagements with many of the world’s major orchestras -- including the Berlin Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Oslo Philharmonic, London Symphony, Czech Philharmonic, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, NDR Hamburg and the Vienna Symphony -- Krivine has appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at both the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion (April 1999 & April 2001) and Hollywood Bowl (July 1999 & 2001).
