HOLLYWOOD BOWL
TUESDAY, JULY 18 AT 8PM
https://www.hollywoodbowl.com/events/performances/2313/2023-07-18/estancia-with-dudamel
Dance company Grupo Corpo—internationally renowned for combining classical technique with a modern take on popular Brazilian dance—joins Dudamel and the orchestra for this rare full performance of Ginastera’s ballet. Set against the landscape of disappearing Argentine gaucho culture, Ginastera’s Estancia tells the tale of a city boy who tries to win the heart of a rancher’s daughter by showing off his skills as a horseman and dancer. Composer Arturo Márquez describes the trumpet as “the queen in the soul of Mexico…a cry of joy and sadness.” In his autumn-inspired concerto for trumpet, Márquez evokes those emotions and more with the help of the technical and musical showmanship of soloist Pacho Flores.

JORGE DREXLER
THE FORD
SATURDAY, JULY 29 AT 8PM
https://www.theford.com/events/performances/2552/2023-07-29/jorge-drexler
A hushed voice and a knack for lovely melodies have made singer-songwriter Jorge Drexler a legend in his native Uruguay. He sings softly, evoking vulnerability, hope, and wistfulness, with one eye trained on the cosmos as he contemplates the ways of the world. His latest album, 2022’s Tinta y Tiempo, explores love as a survival mechanism—“driving energy, life’s dynamo,” as he puts it, and features appearances from Rubén Blades, C. Tangana, Noga Erez, and Martín Buscaglia. The winner of seven awards at the 2022 Latin Grammys (and 13 overall), he won an Oscar in 2005 for his song “Al Otro Lado Del Río,” from The Motorcycle Diaries. He brings songs of wonder and wisdom from across his three-decade career in his Ford debut.
PORTUGAL. THE MAN, CHICANO BATMAN, SAY SHE SHE
KCRW Festival
HOLLYWOOD BOWL
SUNDAY, AUGUST 6 at 7PM
https://www.hollywoodbowl.com/events/performances/2328/2023-08-06/portugal-the-man-chicano-batman
Portugal. The Man started off playing hardcore in Wasilla, Alaska. Now they’re a chart-topping, Grammy-winning, festival-headlining rock band whose song “Feel It Still” seemed to top every radio chart on Earth. They may be on top of the world, but they’ve still got their feet on the ground, playing a sharp and catchy form of modern rock touched up with influences from electronic music, R&B, and whatever else they can get their hands on.
Chicano Batman are LA’s house band. The East LA group has an incredible knack for bringing together the sounds of LA County’s Latinx communities: Delfonics-style soul, Afro-Cuban rumbas, wobbling funk-jazz. It’s all held together by the socially conscious lyrics of Bardo Martinez, who sings with the sweet soulfulness of Curtis Mayfield.
Say She She’s discodelic soul takes inspiration from the defiant hitmaking of Nile Rodgers & CHIC—the name is a nod to the group’s “Freak Out”—and their up-tempo grooves, sticky hooks, and dreamy harmonies are a natural fit to kick off a big night at the Bowl.
COMEDY UNDER THE STARS: WOMEN CRUSH WEDNESDAYS
THE FORD
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 9 AT 8PM
Marcella Arguello has built her comedy around her willingness to explore any topic—from wild anecdotes to race and gender to dating guys shorter than her 6’2” stature—and she is always able to find the humor in it all. Latin Media said her recent debut special on HBO “manages to ruffle feathers while delivering a routine that feels absolutely joyous.” After years of performing rooms all over town, she grew tired of being one of the only women on the schedule and created Women Crush Wednesdays. With a fresh and diverse line up every month, which includes national headliners as well as bright up-and-comers, Marcella mercilessly hosts the best curated show in all of Los Angeles. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience some of the funniest women in the business at The Ford.

The 12-time Grammy and 10-time Latin Grammy winner brings a political conscience and sense of connection to his music, combining nueva cancion and Son Cubano with rock and jazz and music from around the world in a grooving mix that still gets people moving—just ask the rock, reggaeton, hip-hop, and salsa artists who call him an inspiration today. Rubén Blades arrives at the Hollywood Bowl with the Roberto Delgado Big Band, twenty incredible Panamanian musicians who have accompanied him around the world for 13 years.

DAVENDRA BANHART
HOLLYWOOD BOWL
SATURDAY, AUGUST 12 AT 8PM
https://www.hollywoodbowl.com/events/performances/2333/2023-08-12/carla-morrison
Grammy-nominated and three-time Latin Grammy-winning artist Carla Morrison has had an explosive year following the release of her highly anticipated album El Renacimiento. While her style is still rooted in her beloved acoustic-heavy sound, she showcases her ability to effortlessly venture into a larger pop realm with versatility and depth. Over the course of ten studio albums, singer and songwriter Devendra Banhart has forged an idiosyncratic—but instantly recognizable—sound that seems to have been informed by nearly every kind of music being made just outside of the mainstream. Psychedelic folk, chamber pop, tropicália, merengue—they all come together through their guitar.

https://www.theford.com/events/performances/2565/2023-09-03/os-mutantes
Os Mutantes formed in the heady days of the late 1960s Brazil, at a time when political protest and psychedelic music were both expanding minds and busting norms in the South American country. As integral members of the tropicália movement, Os Mutantes combined all-out guitar squalls, traditional Brazilian rhythms, a soulful outlook on the future, and a sense of melody so chipper it earned them numerous comparisons to the Beatles. They’d go on to influence everyone from Beck to Flea to David Byrne, and they keep their torch burning brightly in their Ford debut.

LOS FABULOSOS CADILLACS
LOS AUTÉNTICOS DECADENTES
KCRW Festival
HOLLYWOOD BOWL
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 AT 7PM
Los Fabulosos Cadillacs are a force in Latin American music. Over nearly four decades, they’ve constantly evolved, moving through and incorporating sounds from the worlds of ska, reggae, rock, rap, and salsa. There is, quite simply, nobody who sounds like them, and they’ve collaborated with everyone from Celia Cruz and Rubén Blades to Mick Jones of The Clash. On their El León del Ritmo tour, they celebrate the 30th anniversary of their mega-hit “Matador,” a barreling anthem that blew the doors off of MTV Latino when it debuted.
Rockers Los Auténticos Decadentes became one of the Americas' greatest bands by forging a wide-open style that encompasses ska, cumbia, reggae, bolero, and more. That open-mindedness has made them one of Latin America’s most influential groups and won them a multi-generational fanbase that’s drawn to their high-energy, joyful cathartic sounds.

The children of a Swiss father and Ecuadorian mother, Alejandro and Estevan Gutiérrez play guitar with the kind of intricate, unspoken intuition you’d expect from a pair of brothers. Their instrumental guitar music is informed by expansive plains and rough wildernesses, saguaros and surf, the spaghetti western drama of Ennio Morricone and the surreal psychodrama of David Lynch. On their latest album, El Bueno Y El Malo, produced by the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, they show off the depths of their bond—all without saying a word.
